How to Help Your Son or Daughter through the CUA Student Conduct Process
Before your son/daughter arrives on campus:
- Have an open discussion with your son/daughter about the process of making good decisions, taking responsibility for your actions, and responding to peer pressure.
- Make sure your son/daughter knows clearly what you expect and what you value.
- Remember that your son/daughter will look to you as a role model for dealing with and responding to conflict.
- Be open to discussing difficult topics such as substance abuse, intimate relationships, and other risky behavior.
When your son/daughter has been accused of violating the CUA Code of Student Conduct:
- Speak with your son /daughter regarding the situation. Make sure that you listen carefully and critically.
- Make sure your son/daughter knows the student conduct process. Your son/daughter should review the Code of Student Conduct, the Community Expectations Guide, and the Student Handbook.
- Discuss with your son/daughter your expectations for their behavior. Discuss ways your son/daughter can modify his or her behavior to meet those expectations.
- Brainstorm with your son/daughter appropriate resources for help and support (e.g., alcohol education, personal counseling, etc.).
- Let your son/daughter know where you stand regarding his or her behavior, while continuing to support him or her emotionally.
- Brainstorm with your son/daughter ways to overcome past mistakes.
- Be firm in your approach but always keep the lines of communication open
