University Hearing Board
The University Hearing Board (UHB), comprised of various CUA community members and trained by SCED staff, reviews the most serious alleged violations of the Code of Student Conduct, but may also be convened for students who have prior student conduct history. We seek students who are fair, dependable, mature, and who possess great leadership qualities.
Benefits of Involvement
- Practical experience with interviewing, evaluating evidence, articulating and defending your ideas, and building consensus.
- Enhancement of organization, time management and decision making skills.
- Active participation in a formal conduct hearing setting.
- The satisfaction of promoting justice and protecting the community from abuse and rushed judgments.
Minimum Qualifications
- Full-time students, and have completed one semester here at CUA;
- Maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA prior to and throughout their term of involvement;
- Note that a candidate’s student conduct record will be considered in the application process. In addition, applicants who violate university policy after the time of application may be prohibited from participation.
Minimum Requirements
- Respect for the rights of and confidentiality of any person appearing before the UHB
- A commitment to serve on hearings as scheduled
- Attendance at periodic training sessions scheduled throughout each semester.
- To model appropriate behavior commensurate with someone trusted with upholding community standards
General Information:
- Hearings typically take place during the academic semester, and are usually 2 hours long (although some hearings have run longer, depending on the alleged violation and individuals involved).
- A student conduct administrator serves as a procedural advisor to the UHB while the student members hear the case, deliberate on alleged violations and recommend sanctions. Interested students do not need prior experience to serve on the University Hearing Board; however, there is an extensive selection and training program required for all members.
- Hearing proceedings are managed by a student member, who serves as a presiding officer. Presiding officers are selected by the Associate Director of Student Conduct & Ethical Development, after having served at least one semester as a UHB member. Additional training is also provided for presiding officers.
