The Catholic University of America

Sanctions

If you are found responsible for violating the Code of Student Conduct, sanctions will be applied. Sanctions serve a variety of purposes and are educational in nature, which allow you to learn more about the expectations the university has for you.

Sanctioning at CUA is intended to accomplish the following educational goals:
  1. To provide an opportunity for you to learn from your involvement in a violation of the Code
  2. To motivate you toward making better choices and decisions
  3. To reinforce university expectations regarding appropriate behavior
  4. To educate you about how inappropriate behavior impacts others in the university community
  5. To protect the university community from persons who may harm others or are a danger to themselves
  6. To educate you as to how inappropriate behavior impacts you
  7. To emphasize civility and civil behavior
  8. To instruct you as to how to settle conflicts appropriately
  9. To ensure conflict does not interfere with the educational mission of the university

Sanctions are intended to stop further inappropriate behavior and to make statements about the university’s expectations for student behavior. Even sanctions such as suspension are intended to help students learn from their actions and understand how unacceptable behaviors impact others. You should be aware that some violations of university policy may result in suspension or expulsion from CUA for a first offense.

Students who have been assigned sanctions with deadlines (e.g., community service, educational initiatives) should communicate with their conduct officer if they cannot complete a sanction or need assistance in doing so. Failure to adequately complete sanctions with reasonable effort may result in re-entry into the student conduct process for a potential violation of non-compliance (sanctions violation).

Please refer to the Code of Student Conduct for more information about sanctions.
